A different personality. A different story. Maybe even a different country.

But after a few months, the same feeling appears: you want closeness, while the other person pulls away. You want clarity, while they don’t know what they want. You invest more and more, while the relationship seems to remain somewhere between “maybe” and “we’ll see.”

And eventually, you find yourself asking:

“Why do I keep attracting the same type of partner?”

There isn’t one simple answer, and I don’t believe every relationship needs to be turned into a diagnosis.

But when the same kind of dynamic keeps appearing, it may be worth looking beyond the people you choose and exploring what feels familiar to you in love and relationships.

What Does It Mean to Have an Emotionally Unavailable Partner?

“Emotionally unavailable” is not a diagnosis.

The term generally describes someone who may find it difficult to build or sustain emotional closeness.

They may avoid deeper conversations. They may become distant when the relationship starts becoming more serious. They may be affectionate and present one moment, then withdraw the next.

Sometimes they might say:

“I’m not ready for a relationship.”
“I don’t know what I want.”
“I need some space.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is “bad.” They may have their own fears, experiences, limitations, and ways of protecting themselves.

The more interesting question for you might be:

Why does this dynamic feel so familiar—or so difficult to walk away from?

Sometimes We Don’t Choose What Is Good for Us. We Choose What Feels Familiar.

Our earliest experiences of relationships begin in our family.

This is where we first observe what closeness looks like.

How love is expressed.
What happens when someone is upset.
Who moves closer and who withdraws.
Who gives and who waits.
Whether our emotional needs are welcomed or ignored.

If you grew up in an environment where emotional closeness was unpredictable, a relationship in which you have to “earn” someone’s attention may feel strangely familiar.

Not because you consciously want it.

And not because you are destined to repeat what you experienced.

But because our nervous system and our emotional world can sometimes recognize familiarity before they recognize safety.

This is why it can be valuable to explore what you learned about love—not only what you consciously believe about it.

When Love Becomes Something You Have to Earn

Sometimes a very subtle belief develops:

“If I’m good enough, they will choose me.”

And then you start giving more.

Understanding more.
Waiting longer.
Explaining their behavior.
Making excuses for their distance.

Maybe you even begin to minimize your own needs because you’re afraid that asking for more will push them away.

And gradually, the relationship starts revolving around one question:

“What do I need to do to make them love me?”

Perhaps a more important question is:

“How do I feel in this relationship?”

What Can Your Family History Have to Do With It?

In Family Constellations and genogram work, we may sometimes explore relationship patterns within the wider family system.

What were your parents’
