Family Constellations for love & relationships

The relationships you experience today may tell a story that began long before you.

The relationships we create are not always random. The way we love, choose our partners, connect, or pull away may be shaped by childhood experiences and emotional patterns passed down through generations.

Family Constellations offer a space to explore these dynamics and discover new perspectives on love, connection, and intimate relationships.

How can Family Constellations help you explore your relationships?

Every relationship we experience is shaped by our personal story and the family system we belong to. The way we connect with others, respond to conflict, or choose a partner may be influenced by early life experiences and relationship patterns passed down through generations.

Family Constellations provide a respectful and supportive space to explore these patterns without judgment. The goal is not to assign blame or change the past, but to better understand how family dynamics may continue to shape your relationships today.

During individual sessions, symbolic objects are used to explore relationship dynamics, family loyalties, and recurring patterns between partners. This process can offer new perspectives and support the development of more conscious and balanced relationships.

Stories from those who chose this journey

Anca Monica | Holistic Therapist

I participated in an online constellation session with Monica, and the experience was absolutely wonderful. The power of the spoken phrases was simply liberating.

For over a week, I was in a deep state of tension. Emotionally, I was very unstable—I cried at everything, and nothing seemed to help. Meditation, prayers, nothing could lift me from the shadow I had entered. My mind was in turmoil. Though everything around me seemed fine, inside I felt as if an entire army was holding me back—I had no clarity, couldn’t think clearly, and struggled to function in daily life. Sadness overwhelmed me, and I felt close to depression.

After just two hours of work with Monica, that heavy feeling lifted. I feel I can breathe again. I enjoy life once more. I am happy again. The session was truly transformative, profound, and revealing.

Thank you from the heart, Anca Monica! I wholeheartedly recommend you.

Relationships, love and partnerships

Anca Monica | Holistic Therapist

1. Why do I keep attracting emotionally unavailable partners?

Many people notice that although they want a close and stable relationship, they end up choosing partners who are emotionally distant, hard to reach, or avoid commitment.

From the perspective of relational psychology and the systemic approach of Family Constellations, partner selection is sometimes influenced by emotional patterns formed in childhood.

The child learns about love through their first important relationships:

  • the relationship with the mother;
  • the relationship with the father;
  • the way parents expressed affection;
  • the way closeness or distance was managed.

For example, a person who had an emotionally unavailable parent may come to find this type of relationship familiar.

Not because they want suffering, but because the emotional system recognizes what it has already known.

The internal messages can be:

“I have to do something to be chosen.”
“If I love enough, the person will change.”
“Love means waiting.”

In Bert Hellinger’s perspective, couple relationships are influenced by loyalties and experiences from the family system.

A Family Constellation can help explore the question:

“Am I choosing this partner out of freedom or from an old pattern?”

The goal is not to find someone to blame, but to develop greater awareness of one’s own choices.

The relationship with the mother is one of the first and most important relationships in a person’s life. In the systemic perspective of Family Constellations, the relationship with the mother can influence how a person relates to life, love, safety, and self-worth.

Bert Hellinger considered that the relationship with parents represents the foundation from which we receive life. In this approach, the mother is the first bond through which the child experiences connection, acceptance, and belonging.

When the relationship with the mother has been difficult, distant, or marked by conflicts, some people may later notice certain patterns:

  • the difficulty of receiving love;
  • the feeling of always having to prove something;
  • the fear of rejection;
  • the excessive need for approval;
  • the difficulty of taking care of one’s own needs.

It is important to understand that exploring the relationship with the mother does not mean looking for someone to blame. Every parent has their own story, their own wounds, and their own limitations.

Family Constellations invite the person to look at the relationship in a broader context: who the mother was as a woman, what experiences she lived through, what she received, and what she did not receive in turn.

ÎIn a session, the goal is not to change the mother, but to understand one’s own position and find a healthier way to relate to one’s own history.

2. Why am I afraid of being in a relationship?

The fear of relationship can take many forms:

  • avoiding closeness;
  • difficulty trusting;
  • withdrawing when intimacy appears;
  • repeatedly choosing unavailable people.

Sometimes this fear is linked to past experiences:

  • rejection;
  • abandonment;
  • family conflicts;
  • relational patterns observed in childhood.

The child learns very early whether closeness is associated with safety or pain.

If love was linked to instability, criticism, or fear, the adult may unconsciously feel that closeness represents a risk.

In the systemic approach inspired by Bert Hellinger, the couple relationship brings together two family histories.

Each partner comes with their own experiences, loyalties, and expectations.

A Family Constellation can be an exploration space for questions such as:

“What stops me from receiving love?”
“What am I trying to avoid?”
“What old story is being activated in my relationships?”

Some people grow up with the feeling that they must take care of their mother emotionally, protect her, or be her support.

Acest fenomen este cunoscut în psihologie sub numele de parentificare: momentul în care copilul ajunge să preia responsabilități emoționale care aparțin adultului.

Examples:

  • the child listens to the mother’s problems as a confidant;
  • the child feels they must make her happy;
  • the child avoids causing problems so as not to upset her;
  • the child becomes the “mature child” of the family.

In Bert Hellinger’s systemic perspective, one of the central ideas is that each person needs to occupy their place in the family system.

When the child tries to become the parent’s support, an imbalance can occur: the child is no longer free to be a child.

In adulthood, this can manifest through:

  • the difficulty of saying “no”;
  • taking responsibility for the emotions of others;
  • relationships where they give a lot and receive little;
  • emotional exhaustion.

A Family Constellation can help a person explore this dynamic and observe where they have taken on a responsibility that may not belong to them.

3. Why do I keep repeating the same relationship patterns?

One of the most common reasons people seek Family Constellations is the feeling that they are repeating the same story.

Examples:

  • I always choose the same type of partner;
  • I end up in the same conflicts;
  • I give too much and receive too little;
  • I am afraid to be vulnerable.

Relational patterns often arise from a combination of:

  • childhood experiences;
  • defense mechanisms;
  • beliefs about love;
  • models observed in the family.

Children do not learn only through what they are told, but also through what they observe.

If a child sees a relationship based on sacrifice, distance, or lack of communication, these can become familiar models.

In the systemic perspective, some repetitions can be viewed through the lens of unconscious family loyalties.

The person may repeat a story to remain symbolically connected to their family.

Working through Family Constellations can bring up the question:

“Is this story truly mine?”

4. Can Family Constellations help with toxic relationships?

Family Constellations can be used to explore the dynamics that appear in difficult relationships.

A relationship can become unbalanced when there is:

  • lack of respect;
  • control;
  • emotional dependency;
  • the difficulty of setting boundaries;
  • the repetition of conflicts.

A constellation does not change another person’s behavior and does not guarantee the transformation of a relationship.

Instead, it can help the person observe:

  • what role they occupy in the relationship;
  • what they accept out of fear;
  • what old patterns they repeat;
  • where they lose their own position.

In the systemic perspective, adult relationships are influenced by the place a person occupies in their family of origin.

Sometimes, someone may enter relationships where they try to repair an old wound or obtain the love that was missing in childhood.

A Family Constellation session can support the process of awareness and personal assumption.

5. How does childhood influence romantic relationships?

Childhood represents the period when our first models of love, closeness, and security are formed.

Relationships with parents can influence:

  • the way we ask for love;
  • how we manage conflicts;
  • how easily we receive affection;
  • how much trust we have in others;

For example:

A child who always had to be strong may become an adult who never asks for help.

A child who received conditional love may feel they have to earn love.

A child who experienced instability may constantly seek security.

In Family Constellations, a couple’s relationship is viewed as the meeting of two family systems.

The partner comes not only as an individual, but also with their own history.

This perspective can help a person observe:

“What do I bring into the relationship?”
“What comes from my past?”
“What do I choose now as an adult?”

A child’s first attachment relationship can influence how they learn to receive and give love.

The relationship with the mother can contribute to the formation of beliefs such as:

  • “I must earn love.”
  • “I must take care of others in order to be loved.”
  • “I cannot need anyone.”
  • “I will be abandoned.”

In adult life, these beliefs can appear in relationships as:

  • choosing unavailable partners;
  • fear of closeness;
  • difficulty trusting;
  • the tendency to rescue the partner.

From a systemic perspective, a romantic relationship does not begin only with the current partner; rather, each person brings their own family history.

Constellations can help explore the question:

“What do I carry with me from my family, and how does this influence the way I love?”

6. Can Family Constellations complement couples therapy?

Family Constellations and couple therapy are different approaches, but for some people, they can be complementary.

Couple therapy often focuses on:

  • communication;
  • current conflicts;
  • the dynamic between partners;
  • building relational strategies.

Family Constellations explore more of:

  • family history;
  • patterns transmitted across generations;
  • unconscious loyalties;
  • each person’s place in the system.

In some situations, a person may discover that certain current conflicts are also linked to older experiences.

For example:

  • the fear of abandonment;
  • difficulty trusting;
  • the need for control;
  • the fear of rejection.

A Constellation can be a tool for reflection on these themes.

It is important for each person to choose the right form of support for their situation.

7. How does your relationship with your parents influence your choice of partner?

The relationship with parents can influence what we consider familiar in a relationship.

We don’t always choose partners purely rationally.

Sometimes we are attracted to emotionally familiar dynamics.

Examples:

A person who had a critical parent may seek validation through a partner.

A person who had to take care of others may choose people who constantly need support.

A person who experienced emotional distance may confuse unavailability with mystery or attraction.

In Bert Hellinger’s perspective, the couple relationship can activate deep themes related to belonging and family.

Through systemic exploration, the person can begin to distinguish:

What belongs to the past?”
“What do I choose now?”

8. Why do I keep choosing partners who don't choose me?

This question frequently appears in people who observe a repetitive pattern in relationships.

Choosing unavailable people can be linked to:

  • the fear of vulnerability;
  • the desire to prove one’s own worth;
  • familiarity with rejection;
  • the wound of abandonment.

Sometimes, it is easier to desire an inaccessible person than to allow an available person to truly see us.

Behind this pattern, beliefs may exist such as:

“I must earn love.”
“I must fight to be chosen.”
“If someone chooses me easily, maybe it’s not valuable enough.”

Family Constellations can help explore these patterns and observe the links with personal and family history.

9. How can Family Constellations help after a breakup?

A breakup can be an experience that brings many emotions:

  • sadness;
  • anger;
  • guilt;
  • unanswered questions;
  • dificultatea de a merge înainte.

In Family Constellations, a breakup can be explored through the perspective of the relationship and each person’s place.

Sometimes it is important to recognize:

  • what we received from that relationship;
  • what we offered;
  • what remains to be learned;
  • what we can leave in the past.

In the systemic approach, every important relationship is part of our story.

Ending a relationship does not mean erasing the experience, but integrating it.

A constellation can support the process of reflection and finding a new inner position.

One of the most important shifts is moving from:

“Mom needs to be different for me to be okay”

to:

“I can work with my own experience and the way I carry this relationship.”

We cannot change the past and we cannot control other people’s choices.

However, we can explore:

  • what emotions remained stuck;
  • what expectations we still carry;
  • what story we repeat about ourselves.

In the systemic perspective, acceptance does not mean approving of everything that happened.

Înseamnă recunoașterea realității și alegerea unui mod mai liber de a merge înainte.

10. How can I prepare for a healthy relationship?

A healthy relationship begins with the relationship we have with ourselves.

Preparation for a relationship can include:

  • knowing one’s own needs;
  • developing healthy boundaries;
  • healing old patterns;
  • the ability to receive love.

From a systemic perspective, it is important for a person to take their adult place.

This means:

“I respect my past, but I choose the present.”
“I love my family, but I live my own life.”
“I do not have to repeat the stories that existed before me.”

Family Constellations can be an exploratory tool for these themes and can help a person view relationships from a more conscious perspective.

Finding your place as a daughter means recognizing the fundamental relationship between yourself and your parents.

From Bert Hellinger’s perspective, the child remains a child in relation to their parents, regardless of age

This does not mean dependency, but rather the recognition of your origin.

When a person takes their place, they can say symbolically:

“You are my parents, I am your child. I receive life from you and choose to live it in my own way.”

This perspective can bring greater inner peace and clarity regarding one’s own identity.

Constelațiile Familiale folosesc astfel de explorări pentru a ajuta persoana să observe relația cu trecutul și să creeze un spațiu pentru propriile alegeri.

Sometimes, the first step is simply opening yourself to a new perspective on your relationships.
