How can Family Constellations help you explore your relationship with your mother?
Your relationship with your mother is one of the first and most profound connections you will ever experience. Through this bond, you learn about love, safety, belonging, and the way you relate to yourself and to others.
When this relationship has been shaped by absence, criticism, overprotection, parentification, or emotional challenges, its effects can continue to influence adult life. You may find yourself constantly seeking validation, struggling to say “no,” feeling guilty when you put yourself first, or repeating unhealthy relationship patterns.
Family Constellations provide a safe space to explore these dynamics from a systemic perspective, without blame or judgment. Rather than looking for someone to blame, the process helps you understand each person’s place within the family system and how past experiences may still be shaping your present life.
Family Constellations offer a safe and compassionate space to explore these dynamics from a systemic perspective. The goal is not to assign blame, but to understand each person’s place within the family system and how past experiences may continue to shape your relationships, choices, and emotional well-being today.
What can you explore in your relationship with your mother?
The way you learned to receive love in childhood can shape how you seek, give, and accept love in your adult life.

Stories from those who chose this journey
I participated in an online constellation session with Monica, and the experience was absolutely wonderful. The power of the spoken phrases was simply liberating.
For over a week, I was in a deep state of tension. Emotionally, I was very unstable—I cried at everything, and nothing seemed to help. Meditation, prayers, nothing could lift me from the shadow I had entered. My mind was in turmoil. Though everything around me seemed fine, inside I felt as if an entire army was holding me back—I had no clarity, couldn’t think clearly, and struggled to function in daily life. Sadness overwhelmed me, and I felt close to depression.
After just two hours of work with Monica, that heavy feeling lifted. I feel I can breathe again. I enjoy life once more. I am happy again. The session was truly transformative, profound, and revealing.
Thank you from the heart, Anca Monica! I wholeheartedly recommend you.
Anca creates a space where you feel safe to look at even the most difficult parts of your story. Her professionalism, empathy, and the way she guides the process helped me gain clarity and a deep sense of inner peace.
I feel incredibly good and I’m still amazed. I no longer feel the need to control my boyfriend 😂, I no longer feel the need to argue, and I’m enjoying a deep sense of inner peace ❤️🙏🏼
You’re magical, Anca Monica!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart — with your help, I feel like a new person!

Frequently asked questions
1.How does your relationship with your mother influence your adult life?
The relationship with the mother is one of the first and most important relationships in a person’s life. In the systemic perspective of Family Constellations, the relationship with the mother can influence how a person relates to life, love, safety, and self-worth.
Bert Hellinger considered that the relationship with parents represents the foundation from which we receive life. In this approach, the mother is the first bond through which the child experiences connection, acceptance, and belonging.
When the relationship with the mother has been difficult, distant, or marked by conflicts, some people may later notice certain patterns:
- the difficulty of receiving love;
- the feeling of always having to prove something;
- the fear of rejection;
- the excessive need for approval;
- the difficulty of taking care of one’s own needs.
It is important to understand that exploring the relationship with the mother does not mean looking for someone to blame. Every parent has their own story, their own wounds, and their own limitations.
Family Constellations invite the person to look at the relationship in a broader context: who the mother was as a woman, what experiences she lived through, what she received, and what she did not receive in turn.
ÎIn a session, the goal is not to change the mother, but to understand one’s own position and find a healthier way to relate to one’s own history.
2. Why do I feel responsible for my mother?
Some people grow up with the feeling that they must take care of their mother emotionally, protect her, or be her support.
Acest fenomen este cunoscut în psihologie sub numele de parentificare: momentul în care copilul ajunge să preia responsabilități emoționale care aparțin adultului.
Examples:
- the child listens to the mother’s problems as a confidant;
- the child feels they must make her happy;
- the child avoids causing problems so as not to upset her;
- the child becomes the “mature child” of the family.
In Bert Hellinger’s systemic perspective, one of the central ideas is that each person needs to occupy their place in the family system.
When the child tries to become the parent’s support, an imbalance can occur: the child is no longer free to be a child.
In adulthood, this can manifest through:
- the difficulty of saying “no”;
- taking responsibility for the emotions of others;
- relationships where they give a lot and receive little;
- emotional exhaustion.
A Family Constellation can help a person explore this dynamic and observe where they have taken on a responsibility that may not belong to them.
3. What is parentification and how does it happen?
Parentification occurs when a child ends up taking on a role that belongs to a parent.
There are two main forms:
Emotional parentification
The child becomes an emotional support for the parent.
Examples:
“Only you understand me.”
“I need you.”
“I can’t do this without you.”
The child may feel responsible for the adult’s emotional state.
Practical parentification
The child takes on responsibilities that are too big for their age:
- taking care of siblings;
- excessive household responsibilities;
- the role of mediator between parents.
Over time, the child can learn that their worth comes from what they do for others.
In adulthood, they can become a very responsible person, but one who encounters difficulties in receiving help or putting themselves first.
In the constellations approach, this theme is explored through the idea of order within the family system: parents are the ones who give life, and the child must not carry the adult’s burden.
4. When does a child become their mother's emotional support?
A child can become an emotional support for the mother when the boundaries between the child’s role and the adult’s role become blurred.
This can happen in contexts such as:
- divorce;
- the mother’s loneliness;
- the mother’s emotional difficulties;
- the lack of an available partner;
- family losses or traumas.
The child, out of love and loyalty, may try to fill a void.
The internal message can be:
“I must be strong for mom.”
“I am not allowed to disappoint her.”
“Her happiness depends on me.”
From Bert Hellinger’s perspective, a child’s love for their parents is profound, but sometimes this love can be expressed by taking on a burden that does not belong to them.
The awareness process in Family Constellations aims to bring each person back to their own rightful place.
This does not mean a lack of love for the mother, but rather a more mature relationship in which each adult takes responsibility for their own life.
5. How does your relationship with your mother influence your romantic relationships?
A child’s first attachment relationship can influence how they learn to receive and give love.
The relationship with the mother can contribute to the formation of beliefs such as:
- “I must earn love.”
- “I must take care of others in order to be loved.”
- “I cannot need anyone.”
- “I will be abandoned.”
In adult life, these beliefs can appear in relationships as:
- choosing unavailable partners;
- fear of closeness;
- difficulty trusting;
- the tendency to rescue the partner.
From a systemic perspective, a romantic relationship does not begin only with the current partner; rather, each person brings their own family history.
Constellations can help explore the question:
“What do I carry with me from my family, and how does this influence the way I love?”
6. Can your relationship with your mother affect your self-confidence?
For many people, the relationship with the mother is linked to the first feeling of acceptance and personal self-worth.
The child learns about their own value through the way they are seen, listened to, and received.
When a child feels they have to be different in order to be accepted, they can develop beliefs such as:
- “I am not good enough.”
- “I need to do more.”
- “I don’t deserve good things.”
In adulthood, these beliefs can influence:
- career;
- relationships;
- the ability to receive appreciation;
- decision-making.
In the perspective of Family Constellations, working with the relationship with the mother can be an exploration of one’s proper place in the family and how the person relates to life.
7. How can Family Constellations help me emotionally separate from my mother?
Healthy emotional separation does not mean rejecting the mother or breaking off the relationship.
It means being able to be an adult and live your own life without being constantly driven by guilt, fear, or excessive responsibility.
In Family Constellations, this theme is explored through questions such as:
- What have I taken on from my mother?
- What responsibilities do not belong to me?
- What can I respect without repeating?
In Bert Hellinger’s approach, respecting parents means acknowledging the fact that they gave us life.
From here, a more mature relationship can begin: “I respect you as a mother, and I live my own life.”
8. Can I work on a difficult relationship with my mother through Family Constellations?
Yes, the relationship with the mother is one of the themes frequently explored in Family Constellations.
A session can help a person look at the relationship from a different perspective:
- beyond conflict;
- beyond reproaches;
- beyond the roles formed in childhood.
Themes can be explored such as:
- lack of closeness;
- repeated conflicts;
- the need for validation;
- the pain of past experiences.
The goal is not to change the mother, but to understand one’s own position and emotions.
Sometimes, healing a relationship begins by accepting that the past cannot be changed, but the way we relate to it can become different.
9. How can I heal my relationship with my mother without trying to change her?
One of the most important shifts is moving from:
“Mom needs to be different for me to be okay”
to:
“I can work with my own experience and the way I carry this relationship.”
We cannot change the past and we cannot control other people’s choices.
However, we can explore:
- what emotions remained stuck;
- what expectations we still carry;
- what story we repeat about ourselves.
In the systemic perspective, acceptance does not mean approving of everything that happened.
Înseamnă recunoașterea realității și alegerea unui mod mai liber de a merge înainte.
10. What does it mean to find your place as a daughter?
Finding your place as a daughter means recognizing the fundamental relationship between yourself and your parents.
From Bert Hellinger’s perspective, the child remains a child in relation to their parents, regardless of age
This does not mean dependency, but rather the recognition of your origin.
When a person takes their place, they can say symbolically:
“You are my parents, I am your child. I receive life from you and choose to live it in my own way.”
This perspective can bring greater inner peace and clarity regarding one’s own identity.
Constelațiile Familiale folosesc astfel de explorări pentru a ajuta persoana să observe relația cu trecutul și să creeze un spațiu pentru propriile alegeri.
